JD Vance on federal govt shutdown

US Vice President JD Vance fired off sharp criticism at Democrats on Wednesday, accusing them of blocking efforts to lower prescription drug prices and sparking the latest government shutdown. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Vance highlighted President Donald Trump’s moves to team up with drug companies and cut those costs, but said Democrats “did nothing to help.”

“Democrats say they care a lot about lowering health care costs,” Vance told the crowd. “And yet, when the president took historic action to work with the drug companies to lower prescription drug prices, the Democrats did nothing to help us.” Instead, he claimed, they’ve pushed for billions in healthcare funding for undocumented immigrants, leading to the shutdown.

Vance pointed the finger squarely at what he called the “Chuck Schumer AOC wing” of the Democratic Party. He noted that most congressional Republicans, along with some moderate Democrats, backed reopening the government. “To the American people who are watching, the reason your government is shut down right now is because… the Chuck Schumer AOC wing of the Democratic Party shut it down,” he said. They demanded funding concessions before agreeing to any deal, according to Vance.

The federal government officially shut down on Tuesday after Congress hit a stalemate on a funding bill to keep things running. Both parties are digging in, with Republicans pushing for a simple seven-week extension of current funding levels. Democrats, however, won’t budge without bigger changes, especially on healthcare protections.

Leaders from both sides are trading blame. Democratic heavyweights Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer slammed Trump and Republicans in a joint statement. After months of making life harder and more expensive, Donald Trump and Republicans have now shut down the federal government because they do not want to protect the healthcare of the American people,” they said.

As the shutdown drags on, questions swirl about what’s next for federal workers, services, and the economy. Lawmakers from both parties insist they won’t take the fall for the impasse.
