Trader organisations in Delhi to conduct thanksgiving ceremony in 70 locations following GST overhaul: BJP’s Tarun Chugh

BJP Hails PM Modi’s Big GST Reforms as a Diwali Gift for Indians

In a major boost for everyday Indians, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is celebrating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest Goods and Services Tax (GST) changes. BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh praised the reforms, calling them a historic Diwali gift ahead of the festival. At a recent Delhi BJP meeting, party leaders passed a vote of thanks to PM Modi for simplifying the tax system and easing the burden on common people.

Chugh shared his excitement with reporters, saying the changes come at a time when income tax exemptions will soon apply up to ₹12 lakh per year. "This is a game-changer decision by PM Modi," he added. Trader groups across Delhi are buzzing with energy, organizing big conferences in all assemblies. Chugh highlighted how, under Modi’s leadership, India has surged to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, with the nation progressing steadily.

Starting next week, trade organizations in Delhi plan to hold thanksgiving ceremonies at 70 locations to honor these GST reforms. This wave of enthusiasm isn’t just in the capital—it’s spreading across the country, showing widespread support for the simplified tax structure.

The GST overhaul, announced after 18 months of planning, slashes the number of tax slabs to just two main rates: 5% and 18%. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed this at a summit on September 9, following the 56th GST Council meeting on September 3.

Under the new 5% GST slab, essential items get a big relief. This includes everyday kitchen staples like butter, ghee, cheese, dairy spreads, pre-packaged namkeens, bhujia, and mixtures. You’ll also find agriculture equipment, handicrafts, small industry products, medical equipment, and diagnostic kits in this lower bracket—making life easier for farmers, small businesses, and health needs.

The 18% slab covers most standard goods and services. Think small cars, motorcycles up to 350cc, electronic gadgets, household items, and professional services. Even auto parts now fall under this uniform rate, simplifying things for the auto industry and consumers alike.

For luxury and sin goods, a higher 40% GST applies. This targets items like tobacco, pan masala, cigarettes, bidis, aerated sugary drinks, luxury vehicles, high-end motorcycles over 350cc, yachts, and helicopters—ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share.

On top of that, key essentials go completely GST-free. Health insurance premiums for individuals and family floaters, life insurance, plus services in education and healthcare, are now exempt. This means more savings on vital protections and learning opportunities for families.

These GST rate changes aim to make taxes fairer and boost India’s economy, with experts predicting smoother business operations and lower costs for millions. As India eyes further growth under PM Modi’s vision, these reforms mark a step toward a stronger, more inclusive future.
