UN Chief Slams Deadly Gang Attack in Haiti, Urges Global Help to Fight Violence
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned a horrific attack in Haiti that killed at least 40 people, including women, children, and the elderly. The brutal assault happened on the night of September 11 in the Cabaret commune of Haiti’s West Department, carried out by armed gangs.
Guterres shared his deep condolences with the victims’ families, the Haitian people, and their government. "This violence is shocking," he said through his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric.
Dujarric highlighted Guterres’ alarm over the rising gang violence in Haiti. He called on Haitian authorities to swiftly bring the attackers and all those responsible for human rights abuses to justice.
The UN leader also urged countries around the world to speed up support for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. This includes providing more logistics, personnel, and funding to help Haiti’s National Police tackle the gangs. All efforts must respect international human rights laws.
Haiti’s ongoing struggle with gang violence has left communities in fear, and the UN hopes stronger international backing will turn the tide. (/WAM)
