Hindi Diwas 2024: S Jaishankar and Amit Shah Share Warm Greetings, Highlight Hindi’s Global and National Role

India celebrated Hindi Diwas today, September 14, with top leaders like External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah sending heartfelt messages. This special day honors the Hindi language’s journey as a key part of India’s official languages, fostering unity and cultural pride across the nation.

S Jaishankar took to X (formerly Twitter) to extend his greetings, calling Hindi a vital thread in the world’s growing fascination with Indian culture and traditions. "Heartiest greetings on Hindi Diwas. Hindi is an important aspect of the growing global interest in our culture and traditions. Special greetings to all the linguists and Hindi lovers engaged in the promotion of Hindi language across the world," he posted. His words shine a light on how Hindi enthusiasts and experts are spreading the language far beyond India’s borders, boosting its global appeal.

Not far behind, Amit Shah shared his own inspiring message on X, praising Hindi as a "language of national unity." He pointed out how Hindi acts as a bridge connecting India’s diverse languages and dialects. Shah also highlighted its rising star in modern fields like technology, science, and research. "Heartfelt greetings on Hindi Diwas! Hindi, serving as a bridge among the country languages and dialects, is promoting national unity and is becoming the language of technology, science, and research," he wrote.

Shah went further, recalling Hindi’s powerful role in tough times. He noted how the language brought people together during India’s freedom struggle and the challenging Emergency period. "From the freedom struggle to the difficult days of the Emergency, Hindi has played a crucial role in binding the citizens of the country together. Hindi will continue to play an important role in building a developed and linguistically self-reliant India by taking all languages along," he added. His post underscores Hindi’s enduring spirit in shaping a united, forward-looking India.

Hindi Diwas falls every year on September 14 to mark a historic moment: the day in 1949 when India’s Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in the Devanagari script as one of the country’s official languages. This celebration brings attention to how Hindi helps connect India’s rich mix of linguistic and cultural communities, promoting harmony nationwide.

The Department of Official Language, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has worked tirelessly since 1975 to encourage Hindi’s use in government and official spaces. Just last year, the central government marked the Diamond Jubilee of the Official Language, celebrating decades of progress in Hindi promotion.

As India embraces its multilingual heritage, Hindi Diwas reminds us of the language’s power to unite, innovate, and inspire. Whether you’re a Hindi speaker or simply curious about Indian culture, this day invites everyone to appreciate its timeless charm.
