In New Delhi, Olympic badminton star and BJP leader Saina Nehwal joined hands with former Union minister Vijay Goel to kick off the exciting Yuva Marathon on Sunday. This fun event happened just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on September 17, bringing together a wave of energy and fitness enthusiasm.
Saina, beaming with pride, shared her thoughts on the occasion. “Happy Birthday to our Prime Minister! A big thanks to Vijay Goel for putting together this amazing marathon. So many young kids showed up to join in—it’s proof that today’s youth really care about staying fit and active,” she said.
The marathon buzzed with eager participants, mostly youngsters, who laced up their shoes to promote health and wellness. It was a great reminder of how community events like this inspire everyone to get moving and celebrate fitness.
Hailing from Haryana, Saina Nehwal burst onto the scene as a young talent. She grabbed headlines by winning the BWF World Junior Championships in 2008. That same year, she made her Olympic debut, though her big moment came four years later with a bronze medal at the London Games.
In 2008, Saina made history as the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic quarter-finals in badminton. She stunned the world by beating Hong Kong’s Wang Chen, then ranked No. 5, before a tough loss to Indonesia’s Maria Kristin Yulianti. The next year, in 2009, she became the first Indian to claim a BWF Super Series title, solidifying her rise.
Her hard work paid off with top honors: the Arjuna Award in 2009 and the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2010. Saina’s incredible journey has revolutionized badminton in India. She’s competed in major tournaments worldwide, racking up medals and trophies that put the country on the map.
What makes her truly special? Saina is the only Indian woman to ever top the world No. 1 ranking in badminton. Her story motivates countless young athletes and fitness enthusiasts across India to chase their dreams and embrace an active lifestyle.
