In Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has pulled off an impressive feat with its Project Sampark. They’ve fully restored the crucial Mahanpur-Theyn road link, which got wiped out by a massive cloudburst and landslide just last month.
The disaster struck on August 17, when heavy rains triggered huge landslides, washing away an existing bridge and another under construction over Pedu Nala. This key stretch between Ranjit Sagar Dam and Mahanpur turned into a no-go zone for all vehicles, cutting off vital connectivity in the border area.
Facing tough odds like piles of debris, scattered bridge parts, non-stop bad weather, and blocked alternate routes, the BRO team didn’t back down. The 69 Road Construction Company (RCC) under Project Sampark, led by Commander S.K. Singh of the 35 Border Roads Task Force in Udhampur, jumped into action right away. On-site boss Assistant Engineer Surendran guided the crew through round-the-clock work.
They brought in excavators and heavy machines to clear paths, hauled away landslide rubble, redirected rushing water, built sturdy box culverts and humepipes, and raised gabion walls to lock down the unstable ground. By evening on September 13, the road was back in shape for heavy trucks and vehicles, linking Bilawar in Kathua to Dhar once more. This lifeline now helps locals, travelers, and officials move freely.
Project Sampark’s Chief Engineer praised the 69 RCC team for their top-notch skills, non-stop grit, and ability to tackle harsh weather and tricky terrain. It’s a shining example of BRO’s dedication to building strong infrastructure in remote border spots, keeping Jammu and Kashmir connected and safe.
