Rural roads built under PMGSY cross 7.83 lakh km mark

India’s Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has transformed rural life by building better roads and bridges in remote villages. As of now, the scheme has completed over 1.83 lakh rural roads spanning 7,83,727 km, along with 9,891 bridges. This massive push in rural road connectivity ensures that even the most isolated areas now have reliable access to essential services.

The PMGSY doesn’t just build roads—it changes lives. Farmers can now transport their produce to markets faster and get better prices, boosting their income. Villages enjoy improved access to schools and hospitals, creating jobs in farming and other sectors. Overall, the scheme plays a big role in cutting down poverty and uplifting rural communities across the country.

Official data shows that up to August 2025, authorities have sanctioned 1.91 lakh rural roads covering 8,38,611 km and 12,146 bridges under PMGSY. The main goal? To connect unconnected villages with all-weather roads, linking them to the core road network. This helps improve the socio-economic conditions of rural folks by making daily life easier and more connected.

The government is all in on this rural development initiative. For the 2025-26 financial year, PMGSY gets a hefty Rs 19,000 crore budget, highlighting the focus on strengthening rural infrastructure and economic growth in villages. It’s a clear sign of ongoing commitment to all-weather road connectivity that opens up new opportunities.

What makes PMGSY stand out is its push for green and innovative technologies in rural road construction. So far, 1,66,694 km of roads have been approved using eco-friendly methods, with 1,24,688 km already built. These approaches cut costs, reuse industrial and municipal waste, and support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in fighting poverty. Plus, they make roads more durable while keeping the environment in mind.

A special part of the scheme targets tough terrains. The Road Connectivity Project for Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-Affected Areas focuses on 44 worst-hit districts in nine states: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. It builds roads to help security forces operate smoothly and brings development to these remote spots. Better access to markets, education, and healthcare reduces isolation and promotes inclusive growth.

Just recently, on September 11, 2024, the government greenlit Phase IV of PMGSY. This new phase aims to connect 25,000 unconnected habitations, using 2011 Census data for eligibility—covering areas with 500+ population in plains, and 250+ in hilly, North Eastern, and special category regions like tribal and desert zones, including aspirational districts. With this, PMGSY continues to bridge gaps and drive rural progress forward.
