Opposition parties slam Odisha government over fertiliser crisis

Odisha Fertiliser Crisis Sparks Outrage from BJD and Congress

In Bhubaneswar, the opposition parties Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress hit out hard at the Odisha government on Sunday over the growing fertiliser shortage gripping several districts. Farmers across the state are struggling to get essential supplies amid the Kharif sowing season, and the row is heating up fast.

Senior BJD leader Prasanna Acharya didn’t hold back while speaking to reporters. He slammed the government’s claims of ample fertiliser stocks, calling them outright misleading. "The state government must check the ground reality of fertiliser supply in Odisha," Acharya said. "Ministers should skip their Bhubaneswar press meets and head to villages. If they see farmers lining up for miles outside Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), they’ll know the truth. Shortage is everywhere—farmers wait endlessly in districts like Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and more."

Acharya pointed out that desperate farmers are turning to the black market, shelling out two to three times the official price for fertiliser. He even suggested this shows plenty of fertiliser exists in Odisha, but the government has lost control over distribution. To push for action, BJD plans a big protest near Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Monday, urging the Odisha Governor to step in and fix the fertiliser crisis.

Congress isn’t staying quiet either. Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), Ramachandra Kadam, blasted the state government for ignoring farmers’ woes amid the fertiliser shortage in Odisha. He promised to raise the issue loudly in the upcoming state assembly session, highlighting how the crisis is hurting the rural economy.

The government fired back quickly. Odisha’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling defended the BJP-led administration, saying it’s the true champion of farmers. "People see through the opposition’s fake propaganda against our government," he said. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s team is open to debating any fertiliser shortage claims in the assembly, he added.

As the fertiliser crisis in Odisha drags on, tensions are rising between the ruling BJP and opposition parties. Farmers hope for quick relief to save their crops and livelihoods. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
