15-year-old Owen Cooper becomes youngest male actor to win Emmy, breaks decades-old record

At just 15 years old, Owen Cooper has made TV history by becoming the youngest male actor to snag an Emmy Award. The talented teen from the Netflix series Adolescence walked away with the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie trophy during the glamorous Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

As the crowd erupted in cheers, Cooper stepped up to the mic and shared a heartfelt speech. "Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple of years ago, I didn’t expect to be in the United States, never mind here," he said. "But I think tonight proves that if you listen, focus, and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. I was nothing three years ago, and I’m here now. Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything is possible."

This big win shatters previous records. Cooper beat out Michael A. Goorjian’s mark from 1994, when the actor was 23 and the youngest in this category. He also topped Scott Jacoby’s achievement from 1973, where Jacoby won at 16 for The Certain Summer—making Cooper the youngest male Emmy winner in any acting category ever, according to Deadline.

The competition was fierce, too. Cooper outshone heavy hitters like Oscar winner Javier Bardem from Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Bill Camp, Peter Sarsgaard from Presumed Innocent, Rob Delaney from Dying for Sex, and even his Adolescence co-star Ashley Walters.

What’s even cooler? Cooper had zero acting experience before landing the role in Adolescence. In this gripping four-episode Netflix drama, he plays 13-year-old Jamie Miller, a schoolboy suddenly arrested for murder. It’s not your typical whodunit— the show dives deep into the "why" behind Jamie’s shocking path. Stephen Graham stars as his dad, Christine Tremarco as his mom, and Amelie Pease as his sister.

Adolescence exploded on Netflix, racking up over 141 million views in its first three months. That puts it right behind the mega-hit Wednesday as the platform’s second-biggest success, Deadline reports.

Cooper’s inspiring story shows that young talent can light up the Emmy Awards stage and break barriers in Hollywood.
