Stephen Graham had a night to remember at the Emmy Awards, walking away with not one, but two shiny trophies for his work in the Netflix drama Adolescence. The 50-year-old British star first grabbed an Emmy for writing the series alongside co-creator Jack Thorne. But the real thrill came when he won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie – a huge nod to his powerful performance.
In his emotional acceptance speech, Graham opened up about his humble beginnings. "This kind of thing doesn’t normally happen to a kid like me," he shared. "I’m just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby. So for me, to be here today in front of my peers and to be acknowledged by you is the utmost humbling thing I could ever imagine. And it shows you that any dream is possible."
He didn’t stop there. Graham dedicated the award to his dad, who sparked his love for films, and to his kids, Grace and Alfie. Most touchingly, he praised his wife as his ultimate support. "You are my rock, you are my will, you are my soulmate," he said. "And you know and I know without you, I would be dead. So from the bottom of my heart, I love you with everything I have."
The speech wrapped up with a sweet surprise that lit up fans around the world – especially in India. Graham ended with a warm "Namaste, everyone. Thanks very much." It was a heartfelt touch that added even more charm to the moment.
Graham beat out tough competition for the Lead Actor win, including heavyweights like Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Brian Tyree Henry (The Dope Thief), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent), and Cooper Koch (The Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story).
Adolescence shone bright all evening, scooping up more Emmys for Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Supporting Actor (Owen Cooper), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Erin Doherty). What a win for the gripping Netflix series!
