India’s young innovators have just made history! The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), under NITI Aayog, pulled off an incredible feat with its Mega Tinkering Day 2025. This massive event brought together over 4.73 lakh students from 9,467 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) across the country to build DIY vacuum cleaners in real time. And guess what? It earned spots in both the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records for the largest number of students joining a single-day tinkering activity.
Held virtually on August 12, the event reached schools in all 35 states and union territories. From the snowy peaks of Leh, Ladakh, Kargil, and Kashmir to the sunny shores of Kanyakumari and the vibrant streets of Bhuj, kids everywhere tuned in. Even remote spots like aspirational districts in Virudhunagar and North-Eastern states such as Manipur, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh got involved. Students followed a live, step-by-step online session to design solutions for Swachh Bharat, learning cool scientific concepts while collaborating from wherever they were.
Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of AIM, couldn’t hide his excitement. “This isn’t just a record—it’s a movement,” he said. “It shows the power of India’s youth, from tiny villages to big cities, coming together to innovate. No other country has scaled school-based innovation like this.” He added that it aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat, where young minds drive the nation’s growth. Through Atal Tinkering Labs, students gain hands-on skills in 3D printing, robotics, IoT, and electronics, sparking problem-solving and big dreams.
Since AIM started, it has set up over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs nationwide. These fun spaces help kids think like entrepreneurs and tackle real-world challenges. Bagla summed it up: “Give Indian children the right tools and guidance, and they’ll shape tomorrow’s world.”
This Mega Tinkering Day proves AIM is breaking barriers and inspiring a generation of innovators. What’s next for India’s student inventors? We’re watching closely!
