A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan today, shaking things up in the region. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the quake struck at 1:34 PM IST, with its epicenter at latitude 31.36 N and longitude 70.28 E. It happened at a depth of 60 km, which is relatively deep and might mean less intense shaking on the surface.
This isn’t the first time Pakistan has felt the tremors this year. Back on August 3, a stronger 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled the country at a shallow depth of just 10 km. That one hit around midnight IST, with coordinates at 33.36 N and 73.23 E. Shallow earthquakes like that one can pack more punch because the seismic waves don’t have far to travel before reaching the ground, often causing stronger shaking, damage to buildings, and even casualties.
Pakistan sits in one of the world’s most seismically active zones, thanks to its position along major fault lines where the Indian, Eurasian, and Arabian tectonic plates collide. This makes earthquakes in Pakistan a frequent and sometimes devastating reality. Provinces like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan face the highest risks. These areas hug the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, close to big faults like the Main Central Thrust. Balochistan, in particular, lies near the boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, putting it right in the hotspot.
Even Punjab and Sindh aren’t immune. Punjab edges the northwestern part of the Indian plate, making it vulnerable to seismic activity, while Sindh sees less action but still feels the effects from time to time.
History shows just how powerful these events can be. The deadliest in Pakistan’s records is the 1945 Balochistan earthquake, clocking in at a massive 8.1 magnitude—the strongest ever recorded in the country. It caused widespread destruction and serves as a stark reminder of why earthquake preparedness matters in this volatile region.
If you’re in Pakistan or nearby, stay alert and follow local safety guidelines during such events. For the latest updates on earthquakes in Pakistan, keep an eye on official sources like the NCS.
