Defence Minister Rajnath Singh landed in Hyderabad on Tuesday to join the big Hyderabad Liberation Day event. The Union government is hosting it at Parade Grounds on September 17, and he’ll be the chief guest.

This marks a special moment in Indian history. Back in August, during the 125th episode of his popular radio show Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that September 17 will now be celebrated as Hyderabad Liberation Day. It’s all about honoring the brave heroes of Operation Polo, the 1948 military action that brought the princely state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.

Operation Polo, also known as the Police Action, lasted just five days. Led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s Iron Man, it ended the Nizam’s rule and stopped his resistance to joining independent India. The campaign integrated Hyderabad’s vast territories into the country, putting an end to the chaos.

In that Mann Ki Baat episode, PM Modi shared an old audio clip of Sardar Patel. In it, Patel reflected on the tough Hyderabad case, saying they promised fair treatment to all princes and states but had to make a special agreement for this one. He stressed how challenging it was to handle without unfair decisions.

PM Modi used this to highlight why we’re marking Hyderabad Liberation Day. He pointed out the dark times right after India’s independence in August 1947. The Nizam and his Razakar forces were unleashing horrors—people got killed just for raising the tricolour or singing Vande Mataram. Women and the poor faced brutal atrocities, and the situation grew worse by the day.

This observance reminds us of the sacrifices made for a united India. As the event kicks off tomorrow, it’ll celebrate that spirit of courage and freedom.
