India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki in Kathmandu on Tuesday. The meeting happened at her office in Singha Durbar, where Srivastava delivered warm congratulations from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on her recent appointment.
Srivastava also stressed India’s strong commitment to boosting friendship and cooperation between the two neighboring countries. As the Nepal Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared on X (formerly Twitter), this visit highlights the close India-Nepal ties that have deep roots in history and culture.
Sushila Karki, a 73-year-old trailblazer, made history as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice and now its first female Prime Minister. Her rise comes amid a dramatic shift in Nepal’s political scene, driven by a youth-led movement. Backed by Gen Z activists, Karki will serve as interim PM until March 5, 2026, paving the way for fresh elections and a new parliament to choose the next leader.
The protests that led to this change erupted on September 8, fueled by young people frustrated with corruption, lack of accountability, and political failures. A key trigger was the Nepalese government’s ban on social media, which sparked widespread outrage. Protesters rallied behind Karki for her reputation of integrity and independence, forcing former PM KP Sharma Oli to resign. She took oath as interim PM on Friday.
In a related update, Nepal’s interim cabinet got a boost on Monday with three new ministers joining the team. They swore in at Sital Niwas in Kathmandu. Kulman Ghising, ex-head of Nepal Electricity Authority, now leads the Ministry of Energy, Urban Development and Physical Infrastructure. Lawyer Om Prakash Aryal takes over the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs, while former finance secretary Rameshwor Khanal handles the Ministry of Finance.
This evolving Nepal politics news shows how youth power is reshaping the nation’s future, with strong support from India.
