India’s agriculture sector is on a high note, with the Central government aiming for a bumper rabi crops production of 362.50 million tonnes in 2025-26. That’s a solid jump from last year’s 341.55 million tonnes, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on Tuesday.
Speaking at the National Agriculture Conference – Rabi Abhiyan 2025 in New Delhi, Chouhan shared exciting updates on foodgrain production. For 2024-25, the country hit a record 353.96 million tonnes – up by 21.66 million tonnes or 6.5% from the year before. This beat the target by 12.41 million tonnes, thanks to stellar harvests in key crops like rice, wheat, maize, groundnut, and soybean.
The minister highlighted how the Rabi Conference brings everyone together under the ‘One Nation – One Agriculture – One Team’ vision. Agriculture ministers and top officials from states and union territories gathered for in-depth talks. This year, they extended the event to two days – a change from the usual one-day format – to dive deeper into strategies for agricultural growth.
Chouhan emphasized the strong teamwork between the Centre and states to boost overall farm development and farmers’ welfare. Good news doesn’t stop at foodgrains; fruit and vegetable production also surged this year compared to last. The government plans to keep this momentum going with coordinated efforts.
On a serious note, the minister addressed the recent floods hitting several states. He assured that the government is doing everything possible to help affected farmers in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Assam, and parts of Haryana.
The two-day conference covered six major themes to tackle real challenges: building climate resilience in agriculture, ensuring quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides; advancing horticulture; promoting natural farming; improving extension services through Krishi Vigyan Kendras; and better coordination of central schemes. Experts also discussed ways to ramp up pulses and oilseeds productivity, plus integrated farming systems for sustainable results.
With these steps, India’s agriculture is gearing up for even stronger yields and better support for farmers ahead.
