European delegation visits B’desh amid growing attacks on democracy, human rights: Awami League

Bangladesh’s Awami League has sharply criticized the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, claiming it’s undermining the country’s democracy and human rights. This comes as a European Parliament delegation visits Dhaka from September 16 to 18 to check on reforms and the human rights situation.

The five-member EU team includes key figures like Arkadiusz Mularczyk from Poland’s ECR group, Urmas Paet from Estonia’s Renew Europe, Mounir Satouri from France’s Greens/EFA, Isabel Wiseler-Lima from Luxembourg’s EPP who chairs the Human Rights Subcommittee, and Catarina Vieira from the Netherlands’ Greens/EFA. Local media reports highlight their focus on talks with government officials about good governance and human rights progress.

But Awami League leaders say that’s far from reality. “Any chat with everyday Bangladeshis will show that good governance and human rights are actually getting worse,” the party stated. They accuse the Yunus regime of ruling like an unelected head of state, delaying elections, and banning Bangladesh’s biggest political party—the Awami League itself.

The party points out that millions of citizens feel stripped of their voting rights. Supporters, journalists, and judges face arrests on fake charges or job losses just for their political ties. Under this interim government, minorities, women, and girls live in fear of violence driven by politics or religion, Awami League warns.

The group urges the EU delegation to spotlight this “persecution, lawlessness, and authoritarianism” in Bangladesh. They argue that without freeing political opponents and stopping attacks on religious and ethnic minorities, the country can’t see economic growth or a thriving civil society return. As the visit wraps up, all eyes are on whether the EU will push for real change in Bangladesh’s human rights landscape.
