Deeply appreciate Italy’s friendship: PM Modi thanks Meloni for birthday wishes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently thanked Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her heartfelt birthday wishes on his 75th birthday. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote, “Thank you Prime Minister Meloni for your warm wishes. Deeply appreciate Italy’s friendship and look forward to strengthening it further.” This exchange highlights the growing India-Italy ties and their shared vision for stronger bilateral relations.

Meloni had shared a warm message along with a photo of the two leaders on X. She said, “Happy 75th birthday to the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His strength, his determination, and his ability to lead millions of people are a source of inspiration. With friendship and esteem, I wish him health and energy to continue leading India toward a bright future and to further strengthen the relations between our nations.” Her words reflect the mutual respect that defines the India-Italy partnership.

This isn’t just a one-off gesture. Just a week earlier, on September 10, Modi and Meloni held a productive phone call. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepen the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, covering key areas like investment, defence, security, space, science and technology, education, people-to-people ties, and counter-terrorism. The leaders also aligned on global issues, including the need for a quick and peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Modi reiterated India’s full support for these efforts.

During the call, Modi thanked Meloni for Italy’s backing on important initiatives. These include wrapping up a mutually beneficial India-EU trade agreement and boosting connectivity via the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC). Meloni also expressed support for India’s upcoming AI Impact Summit in 2026. After the conversation, Modi posted on X: “Had an excellent conversation with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. We reaffirmed our joint commitment to deepen India-Italy Strategic Partnership, and shared interest in bringing an early end to the conflict in Ukraine. Thanked PM Meloni for Italy’s proactive support for concluding a mutually beneficial India-EU trade agreement and promoting connectivity through the IMEEEC initiative.”

The Prime Minister’s Office noted that both leaders reviewed progress in their bilateral ties and pledged to advance the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29. Their rapport goes beyond formal talks. Modi last met Meloni at the G7 Summit in Canada’s Kananaskis in June, where they shook hands and discussed ways to build an even stronger India-Italy friendship. Meloni shared a photo from the event on X with the caption, “Italy and India, bound by a great friendship.” Modi replied, “Fully agree with you, PM Giorgia Meloni. India’s friendship with Italy will continue to get stronger, greatly benefiting our people!”

Their easy camaraderie has caught the eye of social media users, sparking the fun hashtag #Melodi. It’s a sign of how personal connections can boost international diplomacy, making India-Italy relations more vibrant than ever.
