In the heart of Tamil Nadu politics, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has fired a sharp warning about the AIADMK’s growing ties with the BJP. Speaking to in Chennai on Wednesday, Chidambaram claimed the once-powerful AIADMK has lost its independence and turned into a “wholly-owned subsidiary” of the BJP.
“AIADMK, a legacy party in Tamil Nadu, has sadly lost its way. They even run to Delhi for help with small internal issues,” Chidambaram said. He added that this shows their lack of autonomy, and the people of Tamil Nadu no longer trust them as an independent force ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
This comes right after AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami’s recent trip to New Delhi. On Tuesday, Palaniswami met Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan for the first time since his election, joined by party leaders. The visit highlights the strengthening AIADMK-BJP alliance, as they gear up to challenge the ruling DMK in the upcoming polls.
Just a day earlier, on Monday, Palaniswami showered praise on the BJP during a public meeting in Chennai. The event marked the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister CN Annadurai. He credited the BJP for standing by AIADMK after the death of legendary leader J Jayalalithaa, saying, “The Centre never threatened us. Instead, they protected our party when others tried to take it over or topple the government.”
Palaniswami made it clear there’s no rift with the BJP. “We must show gratitude, just as poet Thiruvalluvar taught. The BJP has always supported us,” he added, while slamming the DMK government for poor law and order in Tamil Nadu.
But inside AIADMK, tensions are brewing over bringing back former leaders. On September 5, senior MLA and ex-School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan demanded their return and gave Palaniswami a 10-day deadline. In response, Palaniswami stripped Sengottaiyan of his party posts.
Sengottaiyan’s push got backing from expelled leaders like O Panneerselvam, VK Sasikala, and TTV Dhinakaran of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam. As Tamil Nadu politics heats up with the 2026 elections on the horizon, these AIADMK internal fights could shake up the BJP alliance and the battle against DMK.
