Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has praised China’s lightning-fast strides in renewable energy, spotlighting how the country added a whopping 256 GW of solar capacity in just the first half of 2025—more than the entire rest of the world put together!
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor shared his excitement: “China just installed a mind-boggling 256 GW of solar capacity in the first half of 2025—more than the rest of the world combined! This highlights their aggressive leadership in the global clean energy race.” He believes India, with its huge solar potential, can take a page from China’s book. “India has the opportunity to follow this lead, create a global power grid, and become self-sufficient in energy—maybe even an energy exporter,” Tharoor added.
He called for bold action, urging India to “blanket every bit of barren land from the Thar desert to the Deccan Plateau with #SolarPower for #CleanEnergy! #ClimateAction.” This push comes amid China’s impressive renewable energy growth, which is reshaping the global fight against climate change.
Official data backs up the buzz. By the end of March 2025, China’s wind and solar power capacity hit 1.482 billion kilowatts, overtaking thermal power for the first time ever, according to Xinhua news agency. The National Energy Administration predicts this lead will only grow as new installations keep surging.
In the first quarter of 2025 alone, wind and photovoltaic power generated 536.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity—making up 22.5% of China’s total power use. That’s a solid jump of 4.3 percentage points from the year before. Looking back, China’s total renewable energy capacity reached about 1.41 billion kilowatts by the end of 2024, accounting for over 40% of its overall electricity setup and surpassing coal-fired plants.
Beijing’s drive to decarbonize its economy has fueled this boom. Since 2013, wind power capacity has multiplied six times, and solar power has skyrocketed more than 180 times. Today, China handles over 40% of the world’s new renewable energy installations each year, playing a key role in global green development and clean energy transitions. Tharoor’s comments remind us that nations like India can ramp up solar power and wind energy efforts to build a sustainable future.
