Kerala-EU Conclave charts path for sustainable Blue Economy: Vijayan

Kerala Pushes Blue Economy Vision for Sustainable Growth and Jobs

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan kicked off the Kerala-EU Blue Economy Conclave, called "Blue Tides," in Thiruvananthapuram today. He shared how the state is diving into a Blue Economy Vision that mixes strong economic growth with protecting the environment and creating jobs for locals. This approach could make Kerala a shining example for worldwide teamwork in the blue economy sector.

Speaking at the event, Vijayan stressed that teaming up with the European Union—built on respect and common goals—opens up huge possibilities. "This isn’t just a talk fest; it’s about building a brighter future together," he said.

The inaugural session drew big names like Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh, EU Ambassador to India Herve Delphin, and Union Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian. Kerala Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian led the proceedings, while Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal joined virtually to share his thoughts.

Vijayan reminded everyone of Kerala’s rich maritime history, spanning centuries. The state is now revamping its economy with big investments in infrastructure. He spotlighted the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport as one of India’s top maritime projects, set to become a key global transshipment hub.

With its 600-km coastline, the sea shapes Kerala’s economy, culture, and way of life. Over a million people rely on fisheries and related work, and Vijayan called them true guardians of biodiversity and age-old knowledge. "They’re more than just workers—they keep our oceans alive," he added.

The Chief Minister laid out Kerala’s smart moves in the blue economy, like upgrading fishing harbors, boosting deep-sea fishing, adding value to catches, and protecting small-scale fishers. The state is also ramping up seafood processing and exports to grow sustainably.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh praised Kerala as a key player in the central government’s blue economy plans. "Kerala leads the way in innovation, sustainability, and supporting fishing livelihoods," he noted.

In his keynote, EU Ambassador Herve Delphin said Europe wants partners focused on green innovation. He called Kerala a top spot for blue economy collaborations, saying it’s "a go-to destination" for such ties.

Sonowal highlighted how the conclave shows India’s dedication to a sustainable blue economy. Kurian pushed for solid partnerships to fuel India’s growth dreams. Cherian wrapped up by saying the event blends Kerala’s drive, India’s big picture, and Europe’s support to let oceans feed both people and the planet.

The two-day conclave, run by Kerala’s Fisheries Department with backing from the Union Government and EU, brought together state ministers, business bigwigs like Lulu Group CMD M.A. Yusuff Ali, top officials, and reps from 18 EU countries. It’s all about turning Kerala into a global center for eco-friendly maritime partnerships.

This push for blue economy in Kerala could inspire other coastal states in India to balance growth with ocean health, drawing more international investment and jobs.
