Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung has made a strong push for the United Nations to welcome Taiwan as a member. In a recent opinion piece, he highlighted how Taiwan plays a key role in boosting global prosperity, defending democracy, and standing up to authoritarian threats.
The essay, titled “Taiwan must be included in the UN,” appeared in the US-based Bangor Daily News on Wednesday. As reported by Taipei Times on Friday, Lin’s call comes at a perfect time—with the UN marking its 80th anniversary this year. He urged world leaders to live up to the organization’s motto of “leaving no one behind” by giving Taiwan its rightful place. “Inclusion in the UN is key to a brighter future for the Indo-Pacific region and the entire world,” Lin wrote.
Lin pointed out Taiwan’s huge contributions to the global economy. As the world’s 21st-largest economy, Taiwan leads in the semiconductor industry—a powerhouse for modern tech like artificial intelligence. The country produces over 60% of all semiconductors worldwide and nearly 90% of the most advanced chips. These innovations drive growth and keep supply chains strong.
On the democracy front, Lin praised Taiwan’s efforts to team up with other free nations. The country has rolled out smart strategies like economic diplomacy to build reliable supply chains free from authoritarian control. Initiatives such as the Democratic Allies Prosperity Project bring like-minded countries together for better cooperation and security.
In the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan acts as a vital partner for regional stability, especially along the first island chain. Lin noted that Taiwan is ramping up its defence spending to protect itself, but it has no interest in clashing with China. Instead, he called on Beijing to start honest talks based on equality and respect.
Lin also slammed China’s misuse of UN Resolution 2758. Beijing uses it to push its “one China” policy, but the resolution doesn’t touch on Taiwan’s sovereignty or give China the right to speak for it. Despite this, political pressure from China has kept Taiwan out of the UN for years.
Support for Taiwan’s UN bid is growing globally. Leaders at the recent G7 summit stressed the need for peace in the Taiwan Strait, and several governments agree that Resolution 2758 doesn’t block Taiwan from joining international groups. As the UN turns 80, Lin’s message is clear: It’s time to include Taiwan and build a more secure, prosperous world.
