Jagan condemns ‘suppression’ of protest against privatisation of medical colleges

YSRCP Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy Slams Andhra Government Over Medical College Protests
In a fiery outburst on social media, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has blasted the coalition government for cracking down hard on peaceful protests against the privatisation of government medical colleges. Speaking out on Friday, Jagan questioned if democracy is truly alive in the state when police use lathi charges, arrests, and house detentions to silence students, youth, and party workers.
"Why is the government so scared of people standing up for public health and medical education?" Jagan asked on X (formerly Twitter). He accused Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s administration of betraying the public by handing over these hard-earned assets—built for generations—to cronies and private players. "Instead of answering questions, they unleash brute force and even let attacks happen on media covering the protests. This is pure tyranny," he added.
Jagan pointed out that YSRCP MLCs protesting outside the Assembly faced police high-handedness, but party legislators, youth, and student leaders still managed to hold strong, peaceful agitations inside the Legislative Council and at medical college campuses. "Our battle is for the poor’s health security and students’ rights. We won’t stop until the government scraps this privatisation plan," he vowed, praising everyone who joined the protests and promising to protect public health and education for the marginalised.
The YSRCP called their statewide ‘Chalo Medical Colleges’ programme a huge hit, despite heavy police restrictions. Former minister Vidadala Rajini shared that thousands turned up at all 17 medical colleges—five fully operational and others under construction from Jagan’s previous term. "People came in droves to these sites started under YS Jagan’s government, raising their voices against the coalition’s privatisation push," she said.
Rajini highlighted a stark contrast: Chandrababu Naidu didn’t build even one medical college during his earlier terms, while Jagan kickstarted 17 in just five years. Protesters demanded an immediate rollback, but police in areas like Palnadu went overboard with arrests and house detentions, she claimed. The movement, led by YSRCP’s youth and student wings, shows no signs of slowing down as concerns over Andhra Pradesh medical college privatisation grow louder.
