Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha shared exciting updates on Friday about the state’s push for clean drinking water for everyone. Speaking in the assembly, he highlighted how the BJP government is on a mission to connect every household through the Jal Jeevan Mission. As of September 15, a whopping 6,46,758 families in Tripura now have reliable drinking water connections—a huge jump from just 3% before.
This all kicked off when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Jal Jeevan Mission on August 15, 2019. Since then, Tripura’s Drinking Water and Sanitation Department has been working non-stop to pipe water to both hilly and plain areas. “Three-fourths of Earth is land and one-fourth is water, so water scarcity is a big global issue,” Saha told the House while responding to a resolution by MLA Ram Pada Jamatia.
He praised assembly members for their smart suggestions on drinking water supply in Tripura and promised the government would act on them. Out of 7,50,849 total families, 86.14% now get pipeline-based drinking water. That’s covered 587 ADC Village Councils and 606 Gram Panchayats, reaching remote spots too.
Saha gave a rundown of the infrastructure boost: The state runs 4,216 deep tube well projects, 10,176 small diameter deep tube wells, 40 surface water treatment plants, 1,831 iron removal plants, and about 531 innovative projects. “We’re tapping groundwater, rivers, natural springs, and channels to supply water everywhere, especially in hills,” he said. The focus is on quality checks, public awareness, and quick rollout.
The mission has leveled up to Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, as announced in the Union Budget 2025-26. Citizens can flag issues via the CM Helpline 1905 or Amar Sarkar Portal for fast fixes. Plus, Tripura boasts 21 NABL-certified labs across districts and subdivisions to test water quality regularly.
With these efforts, Tripura is racing towards 100% drinking water coverage for rural households, making clean water a reality for all.
