In Chennai, teams from the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology and the Indian Maritime University have kicked off an exciting underwater archaeological exploration at Poompuhar, an ancient site in Mayiladuthurai district also known as Kaveripoompattinam. This project dives deep—literally—into one of Tamil history’s most famous port cities, aiming to reveal hidden clues about its bustling past.

Poompuhar shines in ancient Tamil texts like Sangam literature, epics, and inscriptions. It served as a key trade hub during the Chola, Chera, and Pandya dynasties, acting as a gateway for overseas commerce, cultural swaps, and maritime adventures. But centuries of coastal erosion and rising seas have swallowed much of the city, leaving its treasures buried underwater.

Archaeologist K. Rajan leads the effort, with a team that includes TNSDA Joint Director R. Sivanantham and experts in archaeology and maritime studies. They’ll run detailed underwater surveys to spot remnants of old settlements, port buildings, and signs of ancient trade.

Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Finance and Archaeology, Thangam Thennarasu, announced the launch and shared the government’s enthusiasm. “We’re dedicated to uncovering and sharing Tamil history through solid science,” he said. “This project lights up our cultural heritage and puts it on the world stage.” Under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s guidance, the state prioritizes digs that highlight the depth and lasting impact of Tamil civilization.

Experts expect the finds to shed light on everyday life, economy, and culture in ancient Tamil society. The exploration could also map out Poompuhar’s ties to global trade routes, linking it to Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and farther afield. By blending old stories from literature with fresh archaeological proof, the team hopes to paint a fuller picture of Tamil maritime legacy.

Scholars say these discoveries might not only boost our grasp of history but also spotlight Poompuhar as a powerhouse port in the ancient world.
