“Equality, compassion needed in society today”: Priyanka Gandhi pays tribute to Sree Narayana Guru in Kerala’s Wayanad

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra landed in her Wayanad constituency in Kerala on Sunday to join a special event honoring Sree Narayana Guru, the revered social reformer. She highlighted how Guru’s teachings on equality and compassion feel especially relevant today, both in everyday life and in politics.
Speaking to reporters in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared her thoughts: “The concepts of equality and compassion for all beings—this is very much needed in society today, in the whole political class as well. So, it’s an honor for me to remember him and to be here to pay my respects to him today.”
The event took place at the SNDP Yogam Kalpetta Union Hall, where family members Sonia Gandhi, the Congress parliamentary party chairperson, and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, also showed up to pay tribute to Sree Narayana Guru on his samadhi day.
Sree Narayana Guru, born on August 20, 1856, and passing away on September 20, 1928, was a key figure in Kerala as a saint, philosopher, spiritual leader, and social reformer. He pushed hard for education, cleanliness, devotion to God, community organization, and agriculture. Guru saw industries as a path to economic freedom and believed that oppressed communities could build strong, confident lives through skills, hard work, knowledge, education, and clean surroundings.
Just a week earlier, on September 14, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stopped by the Bishop House in Thamarassery to meet Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil. The bishop described it as a personal visit at her request, where they talked about private matters. Still, he took the chance to bring up key concerns for his community, including better representation in Parliament and the ongoing man-animal conflicts in the Wayanad region that affect locals daily.
