Rasika Dugal recently shared a nostalgic throwback to her role in the 2018 biographical drama Manto, where she brought Saadat Hasan Manto’s wife, Safia Manto, to life on screen. The film, directed by Nandita Das, dives into the legendary Urdu writer’s turbulent years during India’s partition in the 1940s.
On Instagram, Dugal posted a few stills from the movie and opened up about how those memories have only grown stronger over time. "Some memories just get stronger with time… 7 years since #MantoTheFilm released," she wrote. She gave a heartfelt shoutout to Nandita Das, saying, "Thank you @nanditadasofficial for fighting for the film and for fighting to keep me in it!" Dugal also praised her co-star Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who played the titular role of Saadat Hasan Manto. "And @nawazuddin._siddiqui for being the most generous co-traveller in this journey," she added, ending with a red heart emoji and a hopeful note: "Till we work together again" with crossed fingers.
Manto captures the chaos and creativity of Saadat Hasan Manto’s life as he navigated the aftermath of India’s 1947 partition. Nawazuddin Siddiqui leads the cast, joined by talents like Tahir Raj Bhasin as Shyam, Feryna Wazheir as Nargis, Ranvir Shorey as Ishar Singh, Rajshri Deshpande as Ismat Chugtai, Rishi Kapoor as a film producer, and many more, including Javed Akhtar, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Divya Dutta, Paresh Rawal, and Tillotama Shome.
The movie made waves at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters on September 21, 2018. Produced by HP Studios, FilmStoc, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, and Nandita Das Initiatives, it features a soulful background score by Zakir Hussain. Kartik Vijay handled the cinematography, while A. Sreekar Prasad took charge of editing.
