I hope the jinx is broken this time, says Devajit Saikia ahead of ICC Women’s World Cup

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is rooting hard for the Indian women’s cricket team to finally grab their first ICC title at the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup. The tournament kicks off on September 30, and Saikia shared his excitement while filing his nomination at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.

India’s Women in Blue have shown real promise lately. They just wrapped up a thrilling three-match ODI series against Australia at home, losing 2-1 but pushing the world’s top team all the way. In one game, India smashed a 102-run victory, though they fell short chasing 412 runs in the decider. Earlier, they dominated England on their soil, winning both the T20I and ODI series—a huge milestone for Indian women’s cricket.

“India hasn’t won an ICC Women’s Trophy yet, so this is their big chance,” Saikia told reporters. “The matches are in India and Sri Lanka, and everyone’s behind our team. They’ve come so far, especially beating England away. I hope they break the jinx this time.”

The World Cup opener features India taking on Sri Lanka in Guwahati, marking the first time the city hosts this prestigious event. Assam’s cricket association, teaming up with BCCI and the ICC, plans a special opening ceremony before the match.

Saikia also paid tribute to Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away on Saturday. The association will honor him with a 40-minute program at the ceremony. “Shreya Ghoshal is joining in,” Saikia added. “She’ll perform four or five of her hits, plus the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 theme song, during the mid-innings break.”
