Zubeen Garg was not only pride of Assam but also of entire Northeast: Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along condemns Naga student’s remark

Nagaland Minister Temjen Imna Along has strongly condemned a Naga student’s disrespectful comments about the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, calling them insensitive during a time of mourning. Garg, known as the King of Humming and a beloved icon of Assam, the Northeast, and all of India, passed away suddenly in Singapore on September 19. Fans across Assam and beyond are still paying tribute to the star, making the remarks especially hurtful.

The trouble started Saturday evening at Kaziranga University in Jorhat, Assam. A B.Tech civil engineering student from Nagaland grew frustrated after struggling to find transport back to his hostel. In a moment of anger, he made comments that Assamese students saw as offensive toward Zubeen Garg. Someone recorded the remarks and shared the video on social media, sparking quick backlash. This led to heated arguments on campus that lasted into the night, with some outsiders even trying to force their way into the Hunaru Hostel.

Along spoke to reporters on Sunday, stressing that all around 300 to 400 Naga students at the university are safe. “No further incidents have happened after the initial unrest,” he said. The student involved is now in a safe house in Jorhat, and the minister plans to talk with him personally before handing him over to his family soon.

The minister has been in close contact with Assam’s Chief Minister’s office, senior leaders, and officials from both Nagaland and Assam to keep things calm. He thanked Assam MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, state ministers, district commissioners in Mokokchung and Jorhat, Nagaland’s DGP, and local police for stepping in fast. Police, including the Superintendent of Police, Additional SP, and others in Jorhat, quickly controlled the situation. As a precaution, extra officers are now stationed at the university’s main gate and hostels to prevent any more trouble.

“This is a sensitive issue,” Along explained. “Whether said in anger or not, such statements are just wrong.” He highlighted Zubeen Garg’s huge impact and apologized for the student’s words. “We are sorry for what our boy said,” he added, urging everyone to show understanding for the deep emotions tied to the singer’s death.

Along also called on students to stay calm on social media right now. “Avoid emotional outbursts, especially while fans grieve,” he said. He praised Kaziranga University’s management, led by Raini Khaitan, for protecting the Naga students.

Looking ahead, the minister stressed the strong bond between Assam and Nagaland. “The people of Assam are like our big brothers,” he noted. “We’re hurt too, but let’s move forward with peace and care.” He expressed hope that this unfortunate incident at Kaziranga University won’t damage the good relations between the two states. Both students and locals have asked for strict legal action, but the focus remains on harmony amid the Zubeen Garg mourning period.
