Former South Korean President Yoon files for bail amid insurrection trial

South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has asked a court to let him out on bail, pointing to his need to prepare for his defense and some health worries. Legal sources shared this update on Sunday.
Yoon filed the request last Friday at the Seoul Central District Court. That’s the same court handling his case on charges of obstructing duties and abusing his authority. No hearing date is set yet, according to Yonhap News Agency.
He’s been held in custody since July, facing trial over claims he led an insurrection and misused his power. It all ties back to his brief declaration of martial law back in December.
Just yesterday, a special counsel team told Yoon to show up for questioning next week. The probe links to his failed martial law push. Special counsel Cho Eun-suk’s group issued the summons for him to appear Wednesday at the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office.
Investigators want to grill Yoon on accusations of inciting foreign aggression. They suspect he ordered drones sent to Pyongyang in October—right before that short-lived martial law move—to stir up North Korean forces and create an excuse for it.
This marks the first time they’re questioning him on this specific charge of provoking foreign trouble.
The team thinks Yoon directly told the Drone Operations Command to fly those missions. Key military figures already faced questions on this: former drone chief Major General Kim Yong-dae, ex-Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Kim Myung-soo, and operations head Lieutenant General Lee Seung-oh.
Those commanders insist the drone flights had nothing to do with Yoon’s martial law plans. They say the operations responded to North Korea’s balloon attacks on the South.
It’s not clear if Yoon will even show up. He’s dodged the special counsel’s investigation and skipped his insurrection trial sessions since July, refusing to cooperate.
The team also plans to question former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun soon. He’s locked up at the Seoul Eastern Detention Centre, charged with insurrection too, officials say.
This South Korea political drama keeps unfolding, with Yoon’s impeachment, martial law fallout, and North Korea tensions all in the spotlight.
