‘TG’ replaces ‘TS’ on Hyderabad police vehicles

Hyderabad police are swapping out the old “TS” abbreviation for “TG” on their vehicle number plates, following a key decision by the Telangana government. This change aims to update all state references and keep vehicles in top shape for city duties.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand directed teams to remove the outdated plates from patrol cars and police station vehicles. Officials at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) Headquarters jumped into action, handling 188 government vehicles in total. They spent around Rs 1.6 crore on the upgrades, which covered everything from polishing and bumper repairs to engine fixes and interior tweaks.

By Sunday, workers finished stickering and repairing 134 patrol vehicles. CAR Headquarters officials recommissioned them right away. These updated police vehicles will boost law and order in Hyderabad, help prevent crime, speed up emergency responses, and make the force more effective, according to police statements.

The work won’t stop there. In the coming days, other Hyderabad City Police vehicles—like those for Traffic ACPs, inspectors, pilots, and interceptors—will get the same TG treatment and return to full service. On the day of recommissioning, drivers received strict guidelines to keep their rides clean and well-maintained.

This Telangana abbreviation switch from TS to TG stems from a government order issued in May last year. The central government endorsed “TG” as the official code, prompting the state to update all mentions in public sector units, agencies, institutions, and official docs. That includes letterheads, reports, notifications, office signs, websites, and more.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also confirmed “TG” as the new vehicle registration code for Telangana, replacing “TS” on all number plates. The Congress-led government made this call in February 2024, shortly after taking power in December 2023.

For context, when Telangana formed in 2014, the previous TRS government picked “TS” without much fuss. But Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called that choice arbitrary and out of step with proper norms, pushing for the switch to “TG” to better reflect the state’s identity.
