Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman fired back at the opposition on Sunday, calling out the Congress party and its allies for spreading negativity about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address on GST reforms. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sitharaman praised Modi’s speech as a positive, forward-looking message, while slamming critics for baseless attacks. She highlighted how the #NextGenGST initiative truly focuses on people, tying it to the #GSTBachatUtsav launch.
Sitharaman listed key takeaways from Modi’s talk, emphasizing benefits for everyday Indians. She noted that these GST reforms help the poor, middle class, young people, farmers, women, shopkeepers, and entrepreneurs. The minister stressed a “citizen first” approach with the motto “Nagrik Devo Bhava.” She also pushed for #AtmanirbharBharat, urging pride in swadeshi products—”Garv se kaho, ye swadeshi hai”—and boosting local manufacturing.
Modi’s address called for cooperative federalism, with states stepping up as equal partners in India’s growth. Sitharaman pointed out the need to speed up the economy, make it easier for businesses to operate, and attract more investments. She reminded everyone that this major tax overhaul has worked since 2017 because leaders brought all states together.
Earlier that day, Prime Minister Modi announced the rollout of next-generation GST reforms starting September 22, linking it to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign. Speaking to the nation just before Navratri begins, Modi said the changes would kick off a nationwide GST Bachat Utsav, bringing real savings and support to farmers, traders, and small business owners.
“From the sunrise on the first day of Navratri, our country is taking another big step toward self-reliant India,” Modi said. “Tomorrow, September 22, as the sun rises, these NextGenGST reforms will start, helping build a stronger economy for all.”
