US President Donald Trump arrived in Arizona today to pay tribute at the memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was tragically killed in a shooting at Utah Valley University on September 10. Trump plans to deliver a heartfelt speech honoring Kirk’s life and legacy, as reported by CNN.
The service kicked off with touching remarks from Rob McCoy, the pastor emeritus of Godspeak Calvary Chapel in California. “Charlie was never afraid, because he knew his life was secure in the hand of God,” said McCoy, a dedicated evangelical pastor and strong supporter of President Trump.
Joining Trump at the event are Vice President JD Vance and Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk. A host of prominent conservative leaders and Trump administration officials will also share their thoughts. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed up, posting a video on his platform X of the packed stadium. “Every seat in this giant arena that isn’t roped off for security is packed to the ceiling. Honored to be here. All for Charlie Kirk,” Musk wrote.
Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA and a fiery right-wing commentator, died from a gunshot wound to the neck while speaking at the Utah Valley University event, according to The New York Times. Police arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the shooting. Trump administration officials noted that Robinson held left-leaning political views.
Vice President JD Vance slammed the incident as a sign of “an incredibly destructive movement of left-wing extremism” that contributed to Kirk’s death.
Organizers rated this Charlie Kirk memorial as a Level 1 special event assessment (SEAR-1), the top national security designation—on par with the Super Bowl or Kentucky Derby. This setup lets federal agencies team up to boost security and support local teams.
A senior Department of Homeland Security official explained, “This designation is reserved for events of the highest national significance and enables the federal government to provide the full range of law enforcement and security resources necessary to support local officials in ensuring a safe and successful event.”
