India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav had high praise for openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill after their stunning performance helped India beat Pakistan by six wickets in the Asia Cup Super Fours match in Dubai. The duo’s “fire and ice” partnership set the stage for a comfortable chase of Pakistan’s 172-run total on Sunday.
Abhishek smashed 74 runs off just 39 balls, firing boundaries left and right with his aggressive style. Gill added a steady 47, using smart, low-risk shots to keep the momentum going. Together, they built a 105-run opening stand in under 10 overs, taking the pressure off the middle order and making the win look easy.
“The way the boys are stepping up in every game is making my job very easy,” Suryakumar said in the post-match presentation. He called their combo “fire and ice”—Abhishek’s explosive energy paired with Gill’s cool technique. “They complement each other really well,” he added.
Suryakumar couldn’t stop raving about Abhishek’s dedication. The 25-year-old never skips practice and always stays active, even on off days. “He’s very selfless when it comes to his batting,” the skipper noted during the press conference. “After the powerplay, he reads the situation perfectly—what the bowlers might try and what the team needs. He’s learning every game, and if you keep working hard, good things come your way.”
Gill kept the tempo high without taking big risks, even pulling off a practiced reverse sweep that made Suryakumar smile. “We all know what Shubman brings to the team—he knows how to score runs,” Suryakumar said. “Today, he backed his shots with high-reward plays that weren’t too risky.”
Off the field, Abhishek and Gill are close friends, which Suryakumar says boosts their on-field chemistry. “It’s very important to be good friends if you open together,” he explained. “You don’t need words—just a look, and you know to take that quick single or cheer each other on. That bond really shows when they bat.”
This India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup highlighted why these young stars are key to the team’s future success.
