Britain recognizes State of Palestine despite US objection

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made a bold move on Sunday, announcing that the UK now officially recognizes the State of Palestine. He stressed Britain’s commitment to Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution as the path to peace in the region.

In a video message, Starmer slammed the “man-made humanitarian crisis” in Gaza, where tens of thousands have died—many while simply trying to get food and water. “This death and destruction horrifies us all. It must end,” he said.

Starmer shared these thoughts in a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, praising Abbas’s reform efforts to strengthen the Palestinian state. “A two-state solution remains the only pathway to a just and lasting peace,” Starmer wrote.

This decision marks a big shift for Labour under Starmer’s leadership, blending moral convictions with smart politics. Back in July, the UK warned it might recognize Palestine in September if Israel didn’t make real progress. With no such steps from Israel and growing calls for action from Labour supporters and the British public over the Gaza crisis, Starmer stepped up.

The pressure ramped up amid global anger at Israel’s intense military operations in Gaza. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have talked about a major push to “conquer” Gaza City with ground and air forces. Gaza health officials report more than 65,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since October 7, 2023.

The UK government says recognizing Palestine is just a start. They want more to end the Israel-Palestine conflict. “We’re building consensus with regional leaders on our Framework for Peace, moving from ceasefire to a permanent resolution,” a Foreign Ministry statement explained. While the UK stands firm on Israel’s right to exist and its security, officials urged Israel to halt its Gaza offensive, let in humanitarian aid, and stop illegal West Bank settlements.

This puts the UK at loggerheads with its key ally, the United States. President Donald Trump has shown no backing for Palestinian statehood. During his recent UK visit, Trump publicly clashed with Starmer, saying at a press conference, “I have a disagreement with the prime minister on that score.” A Guardian editorial pointed out the growing rift, noting Trump could potentially stop the war with one call—but his stance hasn’t budged, even as US public support dips.

On the same day, Canada, Australia, and Portugal joined in, announcing their own recognition of the Palestinian state.
