President Donald Trump heads to the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week for a major speech that could shape global talks. On Tuesday, he’ll take the stage at the 80th session of the UNGA to spotlight his biggest wins in the first eight months of his second term. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared details during a briefing, saying Trump plans to celebrate ending seven major global wars and conflicts, along with a strong comeback for American influence worldwide.
Leavitt noted that Trump will call out how globalist institutions have weakened the world order. Instead, he’ll share his clear plan for real peace and teamwork among nations. This marks Trump’s fifth time addressing the UNGA, but it’s his first since winning a second term. He spoke there several times during his initial presidency from 2017 to 2021.
Beyond the speech, Trump has a packed schedule of high-stakes meetings on the sidelines. He’ll sit down one-on-one with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, plus leaders from Ukraine, Argentina, and the European Union. Later, he’ll host a group discussion with representatives from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.
The UN General Assembly stands as the UN’s top decision-making body, bringing together 193 member countries for equal-vote debates on everything from security to human rights, as laid out in the UN Charter. This year’s 80th session kicked off on September 9, 2025, with the big high-level debate starting September 23.
Adding to the buzz, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet Trump during the UNGA. Reports from Al Jazeera say Zelenskyy wants to push for stricter US sanctions on Russia as the war in eastern Ukraine drags on.
