Tara Reade, the woman who accused former U.S. President Joe Biden of sexual assault back in the 1990s, just became a Russian citizen. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree on Monday, making her one of the newest members of Russia.
Official records list her full new name as Alexandra Tara McCabe, born on February 26, 1964. U.S. media reports say she adopted the name Alexandra McCabe in 1998 to escape an abusive ex-husband who she said was violent toward her.
Reade first made headlines in early 2020 when she came forward with her story. She claimed Biden assaulted her in a Capitol hallway in 1993, during his time as a senator. At the time, she worked on his staff, and the allegations hit hard as Biden ran for president against Donald Trump.
Biden firmly denied the claims, calling them false. The story stirred up trouble for his campaign, especially since Trump has faced his own wave of sexual assault and harassment accusations from multiple women. Trump, of course, won back the White House in 2025.
Reade’s account drew some skepticism over the years. For instance, investigators couldn’t find any record of the formal complaint she said she filed with Congress right after the alleged incident.
Fast forward to May 2023: Reade sat down with Russia’s state-run Sputnik news outlet and revealed her plan to apply for Russian citizenship. Speaking from Moscow, she explained her fears for her safety back home in the U.S., which is why she decided to stay in Russia.
But things took a twist in July 2024. Reade posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was heading back to the United States to file a sexual assault complaint against Biden. This came just days before the then-ailing president dropped out of his re-election bid.
