Emma Watson, the beloved star of the Harry Potter films, has stepped away from acting to chase a doctorate at Oxford University. At 35, she’s sharing what she really misses—and doesn’t miss—about Hollywood life.
Best known for her role as the brilliant Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, Watson started acting young, landing her breakout part at just 11 in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But these days, she’s trading red carpets for bookshelves. In a candid chat with Hollywood Authentic, she opened up about the ups and downs of the industry.
“I really won the lottery with acting—it’s so unusual what happened to me,” Watson said. Still, she admits the spotlight’s glamour fades fast when it comes to promoting movies. “A bigger part than the job itself is the promotion and selling of that work, this piece of art. The balance can get thrown off.”
Watson misses the thrill of performing on camera, calling it an “intense form of meditation.” She loves how, once the cameras roll, “you just completely forget about everything else in the world other than that one moment—you cannot be anywhere else.” But the sales pitch? Not so much. “I’ll be honest: I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying,” she confessed. “I very much miss using my skill set and the art. I just got to do so little of the bit I actually enjoyed.”
Fame’s pressure weighed heavy on her too. “I don’t miss the pressure—I forgot it was a lot,” she added. The constant buzz even strained her personal life, so Watson’s now focused on building “good foundations” outside the spotlight.
As she dives into her Oxford studies, fans wonder if we’ll see her back on screen soon. For now, Watson’s embracing this new chapter, far from the Hollywood hustle.
