Soni Razdan draws parallels with daughter Alia Bhatt as she shares throwback picture

Soni Razdan delights fans with a sweet Instagram throwback that highlights her striking resemblance to daughter Alia Bhatt. The Bollywood actress posted a collage on Tuesday, featuring a vintage photo of her younger self next to a glamorous shot of Alia in an embellished outfit. The side-by-side images show just how much mother and daughter look alike, sparking plenty of comments from followers.
“Came across these blasts from the past,” Soni captioned the post, sharing a series of old pictures that take viewers back to her early days.
Soni, who married filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt in 1986 after meeting through a mutual friend, is mom to Alia and Shaheen Bhatt. She’s also stepmom to Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt. Now, this dynamic mother-daughter pair is teaming up on an exciting project: “Difficult Daughters,” which is getting showcased at Busan’s Asian Project Market.
The story draws from Manju Kapur’s popular novel and jumps between two timelines. In the 1940s, it follows Virmati, the oldest of ten kids in a strict Punjabi family in Lahore. She pushes against traditions to chase education and love, but ends up as the second wife to a married professor, facing tough fallout. Fast-forward to 2022, and her granddaughter Simar deals with a crumbling marriage and a hidden affair. Uncovering Virmati’s secrets forces Simar to face her distant mom, Ila.
Soni shared her excitement about adapting the book in an interview with Variety. “When I read it years ago, it felt so cinematic right away,” she said. “The descriptions paint both the characters’ inner worlds and the real settings, making it easy to picture everything.”
She explained how the story stuck with her visually long before she considered turning it into a film. At its heart, Soni sees it as personal tales of women fighting for freedom—echoing India’s push for independence back then. “While a nation was about to gain freedom, this young girl battles for her own rights,” she noted.
Bringing the 1940s to life is a big challenge, Soni added. Recreating small-town Amritsar in Punjab means nailing the details with authentic casting, costumes, and set design. And don’t forget the music: “There’s so much room to get creative, blending the past and present in fresh ways.” Fans of Alia Bhatt and Soni Razdan can’t wait to see how this Bollywood adaptation unfolds.
