Missouri Powerball winner says historic $893M win won’t change his lifestyle: ‘I’m a homebody’

Imagine hitting the biggest Powerball jackpot in Missouri history—$893.5 million after taxes—and still doing your laundry the night before claiming it. That’s exactly what happened to the lucky winner from St. Louis, who stayed anonymous thanks to Missouri’s lottery privacy laws.

The Missouri Lottery announced the win on Monday, confirming the ticket came from a QuikTrip store for the massive $1.787 billion drawing on September 6. This Powerball prize shattered records, with the winner sharing the pot with another ticket holder in Texas. He opted for a one-time cash payout of about $410.3 million.

At the lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, the winner opened up about the whirlwind. “I’m a millionaire, a multi-millionaire, and I’m doing laundry last night,” he said with a laugh. The news hasn’t fully hit him yet, and it’s kept him up at night. But he called it “the best problem I’ve ever had.”

Despite the life-changing money, this Missouri Powerball winner plans to keep his down-to-earth ways. He’s a self-described homebody who loves chilling at home. “The perfect day is sitting at home doing what I do—relaxing,” he told reporters. That said, he joked his wife might have bigger ideas. “She’s going to drag me out of town now.”

For the first year, he and his wife want to focus on each other. The cash will ease her workload and give them more quality time together. Missouri Lottery Executive Director Lester Elder praised the win as a milestone. “It was a record-setting night,” Elder said. “This $893.5 million prize tops the previous Missouri record of $293.7 million from a 2012 Powerball drawing.”

Powerball odds are steep—1 in 292.2 million for the jackpot—but this year has seen four big wins already. The latest before Missouri was a $204.5 million prize in California on May 31. Others included $167 million in Kentucky on April 26, $526.5 million in California on March 29, and $328.5 million in Oregon on January 18.

Looking back, the largest Powerball jackpot ever goes to Edwin Castro in California, who grabbed $2.04 billion in November 2022 and took home $997.6 million after taxes. Other huge wins include a $1.765 billion split across California, Florida, and Tennessee in October 2023, and a $1.586 billion shared by winners in three states back in January 2016.

More recent massive Powerball jackpots: $1.326 billion in Oregon in April 2024, $1.08 billion in California in July 2023, $842.4 million in Michigan in 2024, $768.4 million in Wisconsin in 2019, $758.7 million in Massachusetts in 2017, $754.6 million in Washington in 2023, and $731.1 million in Maryland in 2021.

Stories like this Missouri lottery winner’s show how one ticket can change everything—while some winners splash out, others stick to what makes them happy.
