Guwahati, India—Fans and officials in Assam bid a heartfelt farewell to beloved singer Zubeen Garg on Tuesday, as doctors wrapped up a second post-mortem examination at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The popular Assamese music icon, known for his soulful hits, passed away last week in Singapore during a swimming incident in the sea, sparking widespread grief and questions about the circumstances.
The funeral procession kicked off from the bustling Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati, heading to the Sonapur area on the city’s outskirts for the final rites later today. Assam’s state government plans to build a memorial for Zubeen Garg right there, honoring his legacy as a cultural treasure after the ceremonies end.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led tributes late Monday night, joined by Minister of State Pabitra Margherita and other leaders who paid their respects to the late artist. Sarma had earlier greenlit the second autopsy to address fans’ growing suspicions of foul play behind Garg’s sudden death.
“The first autopsy happened in Singapore, and I trust it was fair—authorities there had no stake in Zubeen Garg or me,” Sarma told reporters. “But with so many people calling for another check, we moved forward. We got full consent from his wife, Garima Garg, before starting.”
Sarma explained that he asked Margherita to reach out to Garima, who gave the green light for the procedure at GMCH. The medical team, including experts from AIIMS Guwahati, began the examination at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Across Assam, schools and colleges shut down today so students and teachers could mourn Zubeen Garg, whose music touched millions. In Kamrup district, government offices will close tomorrow to allow more people to join the remembrance. The state has also set up a live telecast of the funeral rites, making it easier for fans everywhere to say goodbye.
