In Jaipur, the Rajasthan High Court has made a key decision on job reservations for ex-servicemen. The court says these veterans can use the quota only once—to help them land their first government job after leaving the military. It doesn’t apply to moving up the career ladder later on.
The ruling came in a case handled by a bench led by Justice Anand Sharma. They threw out a petition from former soldier Narendra Singh, who wanted to apply the ex-servicemen quota a second time.
Singh had already snagged a spot as a Village Development Officer (VDO) using the quota. Now, he aimed for the Junior Accountant Recruitment 2023 under the same category. He argued that his current job was just probation, making it temporary like a casual or contract role. Plus, he pointed out the new post paid more.
But the court shot down those claims. Justices ruled that probation doesn’t count as temporary employment. “An employee appointed to a substantive post, even on probation, gets hired through proper channels,” they explained. Once you’re in a regular government job, the ex-servicemen reservation benefit is used up. You can’t tap it again for better-paying roles or promotions.
The bench stressed that letting people reuse the quota would abuse the system and take spots away from truly jobless ex-servicemen who need that first break. This decision reinforces the idea: the reservation helps with the tough shift from military to civilian life, but it’s not a repeat pass for climbing the job ranks in government service.
