Emma Watson has opened up about stepping away from acting, admitting she misses the craft itself but not the grueling world of film promotion. In a candid interview with Deadline, the Harry Potter star explained how the business side of Hollywood drained her.
“I really won the lottery with acting,” Watson said, reflecting on her unusual success. But she quickly added that promoting and selling movies overshadowed the joy of the work. “I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying.”
What she does miss is the creative heart of acting—the rehearsals, scene preparation, and that magical moment when the camera rolls. “It’s such an intense form of meditation,” she described. “You just cannot be anywhere else. It’s so freeing. I miss that profoundly.” Still, Watson made it clear she doesn’t miss the intense pressure that comes with it.
The actress, who’s been on a break from the spotlight, hinted at excitement ahead. She’s working on “something that I’ve never done before,” so fans should stay tuned for updates on Emma Watson’s next project.
Despite pausing her acting career, Watson says she’s thriving. “I’m maybe the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been,” she shared. She explained how the industry often forces actors to juggle multiple personas, not just on-screen roles but a polished public image that demands constant upkeep. “It’s very energy-intensive stuff,” she noted.
Letting go of those layers has been liberating. “Shedding the multiple identities has freed up so much space for me to be a better sister, daughter, friend, granddaughter, and then artist,” Watson said. It also gives her room for her own critical thinking and personal growth.
