Tata Advanced Systems opens 1st overseas defence manufacturing facility in Morocco

India’s Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) just opened a cutting-edge defence manufacturing plant in Berrechid, near Casablanca in Morocco. This marks a big step—it’s the first overseas defence production unit from a private Indian company.
The new facility shows off India’s rising skills in building advanced combat vehicles, working hand-in-hand with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Morocco’s Abdeltif Loudyi, the Minister Delegate for National Defence Administration, cut the ribbon. Top officials from both nations joined the celebration.
Covering 20,000 square meters, this plant is now the biggest defence manufacturing site in all of Morocco. TASL signed a deal with the Moroccan government to produce and supply the Wheeled Armoured Platform 8×8, or WhAP 8×8. The team got it up and running three months early, and production is already rolling. Expect the first deliveries to the Royal Moroccan Army next month.
This project creates jobs—both direct and indirect—and builds a solid network of local suppliers. It boosts key technology skills, sets up on-site support for the products, and teams up with partners who supply vital parts and tech.
Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Advanced Systems, called it a game-changer. “As the first overseas manufacturing facility by a private Indian defence OEM, it marks our push to offer designed-in-India defence technology systems to friendly countries,” he said. “Today’s inauguration near Casablanca opens a fresh chapter in the India-Morocco industrial partnership, and we’re thrilled to lead the way.”
At first, the plant will focus on Morocco’s army, but TASL eyes bigger things: exporting to other allies, especially in Africa.
The WhAP 8×8 is a joint creation from DRDO and Tata—a flexible, multi-purpose armoured vehicle built for speed, toughness, and quick changes in tough battle scenarios. It packs a strong engine, independent suspension, a central tyre inflation system, and a tough monocoque hull that handles bullets and mines at different levels.
This vehicle adapts to many jobs, like infantry fighting, armoured personnel carrier, scouting, command post, mortar carrier, or even ambulance. You can add remote weapon stations, anti-tank guided missiles, or make it amphibious for water ops.
This India-Morocco defence partnership highlights growing ties in advanced military tech, putting Indian innovation on the global map.
