Trump calls China, India ‘primary funders’ of Ukraine war over Russian oil purchases at UNGA

US President Donald Trump pointed the finger at China and India during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, calling them the main backers of Russia’s war in Ukraine. He claimed their ongoing purchases of Russian oil are pouring money straight into the conflict’s coffers.
Speaking for more than an hour at the 80th UNGA session in New York on September 24, Trump made these bold accusations amid heated global talks on wars like the one in Ukraine. “China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil,” he said, spotlighting how these buys keep Russia’s war machine running.
The comments hit close to home for US-India relations, especially after Trump’s recent tariff hikes on India’s imports of Russian oil. Just last month, his administration slapped an extra 25% levy on those goods, pushing the total tariff to a steep 50%—one of the highest out there. This move kicked in on August 27 and ties directly to India’s decision to keep buying Russian crude amid the Ukraine invasion.
Trade tensions between the US and India have been simmering for months. The two countries wrapped up five rounds of talks on a potential trade deal, but the final round set for August got pushed back. Hopes for an interim US-India trade agreement lingered, yet in July, Trump announced the first 25% tariff anyway. Days later, he doubled down with another 25%, blaming India’s Russian oil imports.
India has pushed back hard on US demands to liberalize its sensitive agriculture and dairy markets, which support millions of farmers and families. Back in March, both nations kicked off negotiations for a fair Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with plans to wrap up the first phase by October or November 2025. As the Ukraine war drags on and energy ties with Russia complicate things, these Trump tariffs could reshape US-India trade dynamics for years to come.
