Kolkata is still battling widespread waterlogging more than a day after record-breaking rains that killed 10 people. Heavy downpours on Tuesday flooded streets across the city, turning daily life upside down with knee-deep water everywhere.
City Mayor Firhad Hakim promised earlier that things would normalize in about 14 hours, but many neighborhoods remain soaked. Water levels have dropped a lot on major roads, thanks to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s quick work in setting up extra pumps. Main thoroughfares now look much better, but smaller lanes and bylanes keep residents stuck.
Spots like College Street, Thanthania, Raja Rammohan Sarani, Keshab Sen Street, Anand Palit Road, Ballygunge Outpost, VIP Bazar, New Garia Housing, and Tagore Park still have standing water. Ballygunge Outpost is particularly bad, with water up to people’s knees. Other affected areas include parts of Rashbehari Avenue, Palm Avenue, the Rabindra Sadan neighborhood, Patuli, Garia, New Garia, Santoshpur Avenue, Park Circus, Topsia alleys, Bospukur Talbagan, Amherst Street, Nagerbazar, Boubazar, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Metiaburj, Barisha, Sarsuna, and Joka. The Kankurgachi underpass stays fully submerged, and water lingers in Minto Park, Camac Street near AJC Bose Road, and around Gariahat Road ITI.
KMC sources say clearing this Kolkata waterlogging mess before Durga Puja starts is a real headache for the civic body. “We can get the roads dry by today if no more rain hits,” one official told reporters. “But heavy showers again would make it much worse.”
Good news for the east side: Rainwater has finally drained from Salt Lake, Sector V—the city’s IT hub—College More Crossing, and nearby spots.
Trains run smoothly on Sealdah Main, North, and Howrah lines since Wednesday morning. Metro services are back to normal too, though some water pools remain at Kolkata station on the Circular Railway.
Tuesday’s nightmare began after midnight with over 300 mm of rain pouring until late afternoon. The deluge caused chaos: Eight people in Kolkata and two more elsewhere in the state died from electrocution. Trains and metros halted, and traffic ground to a complete stop as almost every road turned into a river.
