Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino recently shared his enthusiasm for strengthening ties with India during an exclusive chat with on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York.
“India is a very important country for Panama,” Mulino said. He described India as a key strategic partner and pointed to exciting opportunities for deeper collaboration. The two nations are already discussing ways to boost Indian investments in areas like technology, medicine, production, and more.
India-Panama relations go way back, starting in the mid-1800s when Indian workers helped build the Panama Railway and later the famous Panama Canal in the early 1900s. The countries officially established diplomatic ties in 1962, building on a foundation of warm, friendly relations rooted in mutual respect, growing bilateral trade, and all-around cooperation.
Panama holds a special place in India’s diplomatic history in Central America—it’s the first country there where India set up a resident mission back in 1973. Today, around 15,000 people of Indian origin call Panama home, which has enriched cultural exchanges between the two diverse nations. They share core values like democracy, multiculturalism, and secularism, laying the groundwork for even stronger bonds.
Looking ahead, both sides are eyeing new areas for mutual cooperation to take India-Panama relations to the next level. This momentum got a big push last year when India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Panama in 2023. During the trip, leaders on both sides voiced a clear commitment to ramp up economic partnerships and overall ties.
