South Africa’s women’s cricket team captain Laura Wolvaardt is buzzing with confidence as the Proteas gear up for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. With lessons from past tournaments fresh in mind and solid preparation behind them, the team heads into the event stronger than ever.
The South Africans kick off their campaign against England on October 3 in Guwahati. They’re coming off a strong 2-1 series victory over Pakistan on the road, showing they’re in good shape for the big stage.
Since the 2022 ODI World Cup, South Africa has played 37 one-day internationals, notching 17 wins and 19 losses, with one no-result game. This year alone, they’ve split their 10 ODIs evenly, winning five and losing five. Over recent years, the Proteas have stepped up their game at ICC events, reaching the semi-finals in the last two ODI World Cups and finishing as runners-up in back-to-back ICC Women’s T20 World Cups.
“We’ve had great preparation for this tournament and learned a ton from past ICC events,” Wolvaardt told the ICC. “In the last few ODI World Cups, we made the semi-finals. I remember that first semi-final loss in 2017—it hurt, but it showed us we could hang with the world’s best. Getting to a final is just a matter of when, not if.”
The belief in the squad runs deep, she added. South Africa brings a mix of experience and talent, but Wolvaardt knows the pressure of a long World Cup means staying focused. “I truly believe we’ve got a top-notch squad of 15 players heading out there—I’m so excited,” the 26-year-old said.
She highlighted their strengths: “We bat deep, and with plenty of all-rounders, we’ve got flexible bowling options that thrill me as captain.”
Wolvaardt wrapped up by stressing the basics: “The key is trusting the process and taking it one game at a time. It’s a long tournament with lots of cricket, so we stay present and focus on us.”
