In Tripura, recent tensions have made headlines after an incident at the MLA Hostel in Agartala. On September 1, four young men reportedly threatened Tipra Motha Party (TMP) legislator Philip Kumar Reang, saying they would “chop off his head.” The incident has raised concerns about security and law and order in the state.
Tripura’s BJP leaders quickly responded. BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee assured the public that the law will take its course. “We do not support crime or wrongdoers. Our government is serious about maintaining safety for everyone,” he said. Senior police officials, including the Director General of Police, Anurag Dhankar, and West Tripura SP Namit Pathak, visited the MLA Hostel to assess the situation and speak with the legislator.
The incident involved Pathik Dev Varma, the son of Telangana Governor and former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, along with three other supporters. They allegedly threatened Reang during a late-night visit while he was outside his room. Reang, who represents Kanchanpur in North Tripura, filed an FIR demanding action against the accused. All four individuals, including Pathik Dev Varma, surrendered and were granted bail on Tuesday night.
Reang described the incident as a serious security lapse. He shared on Facebook that he was threatened by drunken young men, who also said they would bring 500 more supporters the next time. He questioned who was responsible for such lapses in safety at the MLA Hostel, which is located near key government offices like the State Secretariat and the High Court.
The MLA Hostel in Agartala has a total of 45 rooms, with 40 allocated to MLAs from different parties, including BJP, TMP, CPI-M, and Congress. Following the incident, a delegation of TMP MLAs, led by Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma, met Chief Minister Manik Saha to demand better security for legislators. The Minister emphasized that the safety of MLAs is a critical issue, and the government has assured them it will investigate thoroughly.
Police are actively looking into the matter. Anurag Dhankar explained that the investigation aims to identify everyone involved, adding that only guests are usually allowed entry into the hostel. The authorities are taking this incident very seriously, reaffirming their commitment to keeping politicians safe.
This recent event highlights the ongoing challenges of law and order in Tripura. Authorities and political leaders are now working to ensure such security breaches are never repeated, emphasizing the importance of safety at government residences and institutions.
