Zubeen Garg death case: SIT arrests musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami

Police in Guwahati have arrested musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami in connection with the death of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg during a yacht trip in Singapore. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) picked up Goswami on Thursday, as he was a close longtime friend and had joined Garg on the trip.

Officers say they’ve brought Goswami in for questioning, but they’re keeping quiet on the exact allegations or if charges are coming. Zubeen Garg, who passed away at 52 on September 19 while swimming in Singapore, left fans worldwide mourning the loss of a true music legend.

The investigation heats up with more names in the spotlight. Sources report that Shyamkanu Mahanta, the entrepreneur who organized the Northeast festival in Singapore where Garg was set to perform, could face arrest soon. Mahanta is at Guwahati airport right now and has reached out to the CID, saying he’s ready to surrender.

Watchers say several members of the Singapore Assam Association are also under investigation and might get detained. Authorities hint that more people tied to alleged issues around the incident will likely get nabbed in the days ahead.

Assam said a tearful goodbye to Zubeen Garg earlier this week. Thousands braved the scorching sun to join his funeral procession, which started from the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex and ended with full state honors at Kamarkuchi on Guwahati’s outskirts.

As per Garg’s own wish, fans belted out his favorite song “Mayabini” during the farewell. The heartfelt track from the 2001 Assamese film Daag captured the emotion of the moment, just like he always imagined. A second autopsy cleared up any doubts, ruling out foul play in his sudden death.

Top leaders showed up to pay respects, including Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Adding a touching note, Garg’s family brought his four beloved dogs—Iko, Diya, Rambo, and Maya—to say one last goodbye.

Zubeen Garg wasn’t just a singer; he was Assam’s cultural heartbeat, blending genres and inspiring generations with his powerful voice. His music will keep echoing for years to come.
