Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stressed Thursday that the state can’t grow without boosting the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event in Agartala, he highlighted how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong focus on tribal, or Janajati, communities is driving real change.
Saha welcomed 920 new members from 230 families into the BJP at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan. He called it a historic moment, urging people to make smart choices at the right time. “We’ve seen how politicians exploited tribal communities for votes, trapping them in dirty games,” Saha said. “It’s our job to bring smiles back to their faces. Before now, no prime minister truly cared about Janajatis.”
He credited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee with starting key welfare efforts for tribals, and said Modi picked up that work when he took office in 2014. “Modi always reminds us to think of the last person in line,” Saha added. “That’s why we’re delivering benefits straight to the people.”
The new joiners will strengthen BJP’s presence in Tripura, where the party partners with the Tipra Motha Party (TMP). TMP currently runs the 30-member TTAADC, which covers about two-thirds of the state’s 10,491 square kilometers and is home to over 1.2 million people—84% of them tribal. TTAADC makes up roughly 68% of Tripura’s land, so Saha insisted ignoring its growth means stalling the whole state.
The government has poured more than Rs 860 crore into TTAADC through various schemes, Saha noted. He also pointed to upgrades at Ujjayanta Palace, now a shining example of Tripura’s royal history and traditions. “Past leaders ignored it, but we’ve restored it with pride,” he said. “We’re honoring our Maharajas, who built this state—something the previous government never did.”
BJP state President Rajib Bhattacharjee, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma, party General Secretary Bipin Debbarma, and Janajati Morcha President Parimal Debbarma joined the event to celebrate the newcomers.
